You were a ball of fur in a pickup truck bed,
Muddy paws, blue bandana tied ‘round your head.
Named you “Buddy” under that July sky,
You chewed my boots, but I never asked why.
We chased fireflies down old backroad trails,
Your bark harmonized with the coyote wails.
You grew too fast, but I swore right then—
I’d love every chapter, start to end.

Through every high, every low, every tear I couldn’t hide, You were my shadow in the sunlight, my moon on a night ride. From clumsy leaps to slow, gray strides, Oh, Buddy, you were always by my side.
