Diane, Put Your Boots On

The county road’s been longer than a winter without rain,
Every mile to that big white building felt like walking through the pain.
I’ve watched you fightin’ shadows in a room of beeping sound,
But the bravest thing I’ve ever seen is you not backin’ down.
They said you’d need a miracle, well, darling, look at you,
The doctor signed the papers, and the battle’s finally through.

So I’m waiting in the pickup with the engine runnin’ hot,
Got a rose on the dashboard and a brand new startin’ shot.

Diane, put your boots on, you don’t need that gown,
The hard time’s finally over, we’re gonna burn it down.
In the best way, baby, a fire made of joy,
No more IVs, no more waiting, no more quiet little room.
The world is yours for takin’, and it’s waitin’ just outside,
So Diane, put your boots on, we’re gonna finally take that ride.

I remember how you held my hand when I was scared to death,
You whispered, “I ain’t leaving, boy, till my very last breath.”
Now I’m the one who’s steady, and I’m looking in your eyes,
And I don’t see a patient, I just see my paradise.
So let ‘em keep the plastic bracelets, leave the worry by the bed,
There’s a sunset and a two-lane highway waiting up ahead.

And I promise I’ll be gentle, but I’m screamin’ in my soul,
You’re the missing piece that’s finally makin’ me whole.

This ain’t a story where the hero fades away,
This is the part where the music starts to play.
I ain’t losin’ you to sorrow, I ain’t losin’ you to fear,
The victory lap starts right now, right here.

Oh, Diane, put your boots on, you don’t need that gown!
(No more waiting, baby!)
We’re gonna burn it down! (Burn it down with love!)
No more IVs, no more waiting, no more quiet little room!
The world is yours for takin’, yeah, it’s waitin’ just outside!
Come on, Diane, put your boots on!
(We’re gonna take that ride!)
Yeah, put your boots on, darling… and let’s finally step outside.
