The Loss

In the quiet of the evening, where shadows softly fall,
There’s a space that feels so empty, an echo in the hall.
Ernie, with your wagging tail, your gentle, soothing eyes,
You’ve left a hole within our hearts, a love that never dies.

With paws that danced through morning dew, you chased the golden sun,
Through fields of joy and laughter, each day a new adventure spun.
You’d greet us with your boundless joy, a bark, a playful leap,
Now silence fills the corners where once your spirit leaped.

The leash hangs by the doorway, untouched and neatly coiled,
No more the sound of pattering paws, no more the earth unsoiled.
We gather all your memories, each snuggle, each sweet sigh,
And in the warmth of those we’ve shared, we let our teardrops dry.

For love like yours, so pure and true, can never fade away,
Though time may dim the edges, in our hearts you’ll always stay.
Ernie, sweet companion, you taught us how to love,
And as we look to the starlit sky, we know you’re up above.

So here’s to you, dear friend of mine, in every whispered prayer,
You brought us joy, you brought us peace, a bond beyond compare.
Though the days will feel a little less, your spirit will remain,
In every cherished memory, through laughter and through pain.
